Continuing its thrice-yearly tradition of honoring its student-athletes, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held its annual Varsity Sports Awards Dinner. The Booster Club-sponsored event celebrated the recently completed fall sports season by taking a night to recognize the school’s gymnastics, cross-country, boys and girls soccer, field hockey, girls tennis, volleyball, and football teams.
Continuing a time-honored tradition, six special memorial awards were handed to outstanding athletes for demonstrating leadership on and off the field. This year Daniela Rendon (Girls Soccer) was awarded the Michael S. Cohen Award, Matessa Turner (Gymnastics) was the recipient of the Dolores Sandefur Award, Michael Benson (Boys Soccer) was presented with the Anthony Lombardo Award, Jacqueline Clemens (Field Hockey) received the Barbara Day Award, Alison Nahrevar (Volleyball) received the Deborah Tekosky Award, and Desmond Guidroz (sport?) was the recipient of the second annual Christopher Urban Award.
