Walking in a Winter Wonderland

It was a winter wonderland at Great Neck Road Elementary School, as physical education teachers William Bennett and Rachel Cone transformed the gymnasium into an oasis of winter-themed activities. The students increased their heart rates as they skied down the Great Neck Road Mountain utilizing the Nintendo Wii game system and skated around the ice rink with the help of carpet squares. Their brains were put to the test as they were tasked with putting together the polar puzzle and spelling winter-related words at the letter scramble. The toy toss, holiday hockey and holiday bowling worked on the students’ hand-eye coordination.“We do the wonderland each year for the students as a culminating event before the holiday break,” stated Mr. Bennett. “We utilize a lot of the skills we teach over the course of the school year and turn them into winter-based theme activities. Most of all, we want to offer something special for the students of this building. We hope that this is a positive experience for them, and that one day they will look back and remember how much fun they had as elementary students.”
