Superstorm Sandy may have pushed back their performance date by a few weeks, but as they saying goes, “The show must go on!” and at Copiague Middle School, the show did just that. Under the direction of Marc Levenson, and with the assistance of Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School interns, the theater students worked hard for weeks learning lines, choreography and musical numbers in preparation for their stage debut of “Once Upon a Mattress.”“Once Upon a Mattress” is a popular retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea." Under the law, no one shall marry until Queen Aggravain’s son, Prince Dauntless, marries. However, every petitioning princess is sent away after failing an unfair test devised by the Queen. Things take a turn when Sir Harry goes off to the swamps and brings back Princess Winnifred for Prince Dauntless. The queen is horrified and immediately begins to scheme, assisted by her wizard sidekick. With a little help from Sir Harry, the King and the Jester, however, Winnifred is not quite so easy to get rid of.
For the two performances, Dylan Chambers portrayed Prince Dauntless and Princess Winnifred was played by Jade Dickenson, while the Queen, Sir Harry, the King and the Jester were played by Crystal Betz, C-Jay Wall, Nicholas Favichia and Tiana Roe, respectively.
