Remembering Our Veterans

Fifth-graders at Copiague’s Susan E. Wiley Elementary School honored veterans of the United States Armed Forces as part of their annual Veterans Day celebration. Postponed due to Superstorm Sandy, this year’s celebration was held on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, but still included the usual pomp and circumstance associated with the annual event. During the celebration, which was organized by the school’s fifth-grade teachers and included guests from the Dominican Village in Amityville, students read original essays and poems about Veterans Day and viewed a photo slideshow, created by librarian Lisa Miller, that highlighted the veterans during their years of service. Additionally, under the direction of music teacher Karen Swenson, members of the band performed patriotic songs and the entire fifth grade sang “The Armed Forces Medley.” Following the slideshow, the students spent time with the veterans, asking them questions such as their reasons for joining the armed forces, and listened as the veterans shared stories of their time in service to the United States.
