Continuing a tradition of more than ten years, Jim Gilchrist, a Home Depot associate, traveled to the Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in Copiague to assist the second-grade students in Scott Garofola’s class in constructing birdhouses. Under the careful supervision of the adult volunteers, the students, all wearing bright orange aprons, listened to the instructions and then began to put hammer to nail as they attempted to make the perfect birdhouses. Following Mr. Gilchrist’s visit, the second graders worked in their art class to personalize their houses with paint and markers. Through this partnership with Home Depot, Mr. Gilchrist visits all of the District’s second-grade classrooms and teaches the students how to build birdhouses. Home Depot provides the tools and materials that the students use to assemble and complete their birdhouses. The program allows the students the opportunity to practice following instructions, and working cooperatively in small groups, while further developing their hand-eye coordination.
