On Wednesday, October 12, members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School track team and their coach, George Schroeder, led fellow students and staff members on a three-mile run/walk in memory and honor of Christopher Urban, their friend and teammate. Christopher passed away suddenly one year ago from an unknown cerebral arteriovenous malformation, also known as AVM. “Chris was a three-season runner and in his junior year when he was suddenly taken away from us,” remarked Coach Schroeder. “This run/walk will be a tribute and testimony to his unwavering spirit of determination which has since guided our team. His mantra, and now ours, ‘Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn't work hard,’ not only is emblazoned upon our team shirts, but also upon our hearts and minds, especially when running and racing.” The students began and finished their run at the high school, making a stop at the home of Christopher’s parents, where they joined the students and staff on the final quarter mile.
