Every year during Homecoming weekend the Copiague School District honors past graduates of the Copiague Public Schools who have succeeded in their careers and lives, or have distinguished themselves by virtue of their contributions to community and society. This year, hours after cheering fans watched the Walter G. O'Connell Copiague High School Eagles defeat Smithtown East, the celebrating continued as honored guests, their families, and friends gathered at the high school for the Annual Hall of Achievement induction ceremony. In honor of the thirteenth year of the Hall of Achievement, four alumni were inducted into the Hall at a special ceremony.“It is an honor and a privilege to recognized these four individuals into our Hall of Achievement,” said Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Leunig. “The goal of the Hall of Achievement is to introduce positive role models to our school community. Such models, by their very nature, inspire students to adopt high aspirations. At the conclusion of tonight’s ceremony, we will have inducted 69 accomplished and deserving individuals.” Added Board of Education President Laura Gavey, “Tonight’s inductees continue the tradition of giving back and inspire our students to reach for the stars.”
This year’s honorees included Joseph Joyner, Class of 1967; Walter M. O’Connell, Class of 1964; Marie Theresa Silinonte-Pulido, Class of 1977; and Peter Sayevich, Class of 1978.
The evening concluded with the unveiling of the wall that holds the Hall of Achievement plaques prominently displayed in the main hallway of Walter G. O'Connell Copiague High School.
