College and Career students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School are participating in a pilot program where they volunteer at the Dominican Village, a not-for-profit independent, assisted living and respite care retirement community, to teach the residents valuable computer skills. During their Sunday visits, the business students work with the residents to instruct them on how to set up email accounts, send online greeting cards, and utilize programs such as Microsoft Word and Publisher. “The kids are doing a great thing by going there on their own time over the weekend,” said business teacher Louise Curci, who organized the program. “The residents are thrilled to learn these new skills, and the students enjoy taking on the role of teacher and sharing their technology skills.”
While at the Village, the high schoolers also participate in “Fun Day Sunday,” where they play games and participate in dance sessions with the residents.
