Fourteen students in the Copiague School District stood out amongst their peers and were honored for their hard work by the Board of Education at the biannual Student Recognition Awards. This tradition was started by the Board of Education to honor students who make unique contributions to their school community or have succeeded despite personal challenges. The fourteen students were recognized and presented with framed certificates of achievement by Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Leunig, followed by congratulations from the Board. “Twice a year we seek nominations from principals and teachers. We always get a great group of students, many of whom have overcome obstacles and have inspiring stories,” remarked Mr. Leunig. This January, the Board recognized the following students: Deauville Gardens Elementary School: Radelyn Genao Ramos, Olivia Healy, Kayla Urban; Great Neck Road Elementary School: Dariel Nunez, Ronal Villegas, Guadalupe Vasquez Martinez; Susan E. Wiley Elementary School: Victoria Worry, Alexis Orshowitz; Copiague Middle School: Davina Smith, Karla Lopez, Marcus Weeks; and Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School: Arianna Mohan, Sarwat Saleem, Joel Fernandez Leonardo.
