Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School student Lindsay Griffiths placed first in the original non-native poetry contest during Hofstra's Concurso Anual de Poesia (Annual Poetry Competition) for Long Island high school students. The purpose of the contest is to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their achievements in Spanish and to participate in an extra-curricular activity of broad cultural impact. Students have the option of reciting a poem from a Spanish author or rendering an original poetic composition in Spanish delivered from memory.
Additionally, Stwart Peña placed third in the category of original native poetry. Lindsay and Stwart are members of the Spanish Club, which is advised by Flor Melgar.
