On Feb. 26, Copiague’s Deauville Gardens East Elementary School held its second Pajama Read Night of the 2012-13 school year. The PJ Read Nights reinforce the importance of reading, help increase parent involvement and strengthen the connection between home and school.
During the event, second- and third-grade students, wearing their comfiest pajamas, were set up in small groups where they listened as teachers read Pam Munoz Ryan’s “The Flag We Love” and discussed facts they learned about the American flag.
As the students were working on their listening skills, parents gathered in the cafeteria to hear school literacy coach Jacki Kelly give a young writers presentation. Ms. Kelly focused her presentation on strategies and techniques that will help parents assist their children in becoming better writers. Following the presentation, parents joined their children in the classrooms to work on a writing activity that allowed the parents to utilize the strategies they learned in the workshop.
