Fourth-grade students in Cindy Costello’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in Copiague celebrated autumn by utilizing pumpkins to enhance their mathematics, science, and English Language Arts skills. Pumpkins were measured and weighed in mathematics lessons, dissected and examined in science experiments, and described and illustrated through literary exercises. In preparation for their pumpkin lesson, the students read the Roald Dahl novel James and the Giant Peach. All seeds removed from the pumpkins during the science experiments were given to the students to use in recipes at home with their families.
