For the past two years, students at Copiague Middle School have partnered with the American Heart Association to help fight heart disease. In April, students participated in the Hoops for Heart Program in conjunction with their physical education classes. As part of the program students display their athletic skills while competing against one another in a basketball-related event.
Coupled with the physical education curriculum, the program allows students to learn about cardiovascular fitness while raising funds for research and educational programs on heart disease. The program not only benefits the students through physical activity, but also allows them to use their critical thinking skills. The students helped plan and organize the event by securing donations from parents and neighbors. This year the students at the middle school helped raise more than $2,300 for the American Heart Association.
