Copiague Middle School students took a stand against substance abuse by participating in National Red Ribbon Week. From October 26 to October 30, members of Students Against Destructive Decisions promoted the event through schoolwide announcements, while eighth-grade students received instruction about the program more in-depth in their Health classes. The students learned about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, and pledged to be educated about drugs and other chemicals that could be harmful to their bodies by signing postcards announcing what they’d rather do than drugs. The entire event was sponsored by S.A.D.D. and organized by its advisors, Jennifer Palazzo and Marisa Annese. The United States Congress created Red Ribbon Week in 1988 to help spread the message about the dangers of drug use.
