Copiague Hosts First Annual Urban Memorial Track Invitational
Earlier this year, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School junior and member of the track and cross-country teams Christopher Urban passed away unexpectedly. To honor Christopher’s memory and his commitment to the team and sport he loved, coaches George Schroeder and John Sack organized the First Annual Urban Memorial Track Invitational. “Sacrifice, dedication, perseverance: these were not just words to Chris, they were a daily ritual,” stated Mr. Schroeder.
With rain steadily flowing throughout the day and teams traveling from as close as Lindenhurst to as far east as Mattituck, the sun was able to break through the clouds as the first event began. In addition to the standard track-and-field events, fifth graders from the three elementary schools – Deauville Gardens, Great Neck Road, and Susan E. Wiley – participated in a special 4x100 relay with each participant receiving a medal.
