In preparation of International Top Spinning Day, the students in Lauren Lefkowitz’s technology class at Copiague Middle School created their own spinning tops utilizing recyclable materials such as paper, bottle caps, compact discs, pens, marbles, and milk cartons. On October 12, the students in the classes gathered together after school with their homemade tops, as well as tops from various cultures around the world, to participate in the worldwide event.“International Top Spinning Day exists for two reasons. One is to celebrate the fact that spinning tops are one of the oldest known toys in almost every country, and the second is because the earth is a giant spinning top,” remarked Ms. Lefkowitz.“This event allows my students to explore a history of technology while celebrating each of their individual cultures,” she explained. “In preparing for this event, students often become curious, and many of them create and research tops and spinning toys on their own time. I love when students tell me that they talked to their families about our project, and it’s exciting when they bring in tops that represent their background to share with the class.”
