Bugs were the buzzword, as students in kindergarten through second grade at Copiague’s Susan E. Wiley Elementary School attended the school’s Pajama Read Night. Dressed in their favorite pair of PJs, the students returned to their school for an evening of literacy, snacks and fun. As the students were enjoying themselves while teachers read fiction and non-fiction books about bugs, their parents gathered in the cafeteria for a presentation introducing the Common Core standards. The parent presentation also offered strategies and tips on how parents can help their child increase their reading proficiency, as well as ideas on how to incorporate non-fiction into their child’s reading repertoire. At the conclusion of the evening, each student was presented with a bag of goodies containing a non-fiction book on bugs, a pencil and a bookmark inscribed with the saying “Bee a Reader.”
