Members of the Copiague Fire Department recently toured the Copiague School District’s elementary schools during fire prevention week. The firefighters visited the schools to teach the students the importance of fire safety and prevention. At Great Neck Road Elementary School, firefighters spoke to the children about the importance of being prepared and alert if caught in a fire. They told them that if they see smoke, smell smoke, or hear the smoke alarm they are to get outside immediately, and that they should not stop and gather belongings during a fire because belongings are replaceable. They also told the students to speak to their parents about setting up a place where they can meet if they are ever in a situation where their house is on fire. The interactive assembly allowed students the opportunity to ask the firefighters questions about safety and the gear they wear during a fire. One of the firefighters dressed in his full gear, including oxygen tank and axe, so students could see what a firefighter would look like if encountered in a fire. The assembly also had student volunteers performing the correct way to stop, drop and roll. In addition to the districtwide assemblies, the kindergarten students took a field trip to the Copiague Fire House where they received a guided tour.
