On Jan. 10, students and staff throughout the Copiague School District celebrated the district’s fourth annual College Day initiative. The purpose behind the creation of College Day is to empower Copiague’s students to aspire to higher education. During the day, students participated in a variety of activities geared toward getting them excited about attending college. Activities throughout the day included Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students teaching science to Great Neck Road Elementary School students, Copiague Middle School National Junior Honor Society students acting as college representatives in a mini college fair, Susan E. Wiley Elementary School students attending a university orientation with Hofsta University students, a West vs. East basketball game at Deavuille Gardens East and Deauville Gardens West elementary schools, and alumni speakers. The celebration continued into the night, as parents arrived at the high school to listen to and garner advice from a broad range of experts in preparing their children for college, and to visit a college and community service fair.
