Continuing their tradition of promoting healthy habits and lifestyles while being community-minded, the physical education teachers at Copiague Middle School sponsored the American Heart Association’s Hoops for Heart program.
As part of the program, students display their skills while competing against one another in various basketball events. Coupled with the physical education curriculum, the program allows students to learn about cardiovascular fitness while raising funds for research and educational programs on heart disease.
This year, the students participated in a number of basketball stations, including a free-throw station, a three-point shootout and competitive play (two-on-two, three-on-three, four-on-four and five-on-five), a passing station and a dribbling station.
According to the AHA, every $50 raised by the students gives the association the ability to save one life. This year, the school raised more than $1,500 for the AHA.
