Forty-seven students were recognized in a special candlelighting ceremony on May 16 at Copiague Middle School, as the seventh- and eighth-graders were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. In front of members of the Board of Education, administration, and family and friends, the inductees celebrated the four pillars of the NJHS: service, character, scholarship and leadership. During the ceremony, the new inductees heard congratulatory remarks from Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Leunig, Principal Andrew Lagnado, advisers Paul Harvey and Francesca Walker, and the student-chosen guest speaker, social studies teacher Stephen Cooney. “Being part of this society illustrates not only your achievement, but your commitment to excellence in the classroom,” said Mr. Cooney. “You have all proven that you value your education and are willing to work hard for academic success. This is only the beginning.”
