To celebrate Veterans Day, fifth-grade students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in Copiague visited the residents of the Dominican Village in Amityville who are veterans of the United States Armed Forces. During the celebration, students read original essays and poems about Veterans Day, sang an Armed Forces medley with their music teacher Karen Swenson, and viewed a photo slideshow, created by librarian Lisa Miller, that highlighted the veterans during their years of service. Following the slideshow, the students spent time with the veterans, asking them questions such as their reasons for joining the armed forces, and listened as the veterans shared stories of their time in service to the United States.“You have a lot of stories and a lot of memories, and our students are very excited to hear you share a few of them,” stated fifth-grade teacher Peggy Murphy, who for arranged the visit. “It makes Veterans Day that much more meaningful to our students to hear your experiences.”
