This year, members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Compassion Without Borders club participated in the annual “Ride for Life,” which helps raise funds and awareness for those afflicted with ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Founder of Ride for Life Chris Pendergast, who has been living with ALS for 19 years, stopped by the high school on his journey to speak with Copiague students. Following his brief but inspirational words, the students joined Chris and his group as they walked toward Massapequa High School. The high schoolers raised more than $600, which was donated to help find a cure for ALS.
During the “Ride for Life,” ALS patients rode their electric wheelchairs more than 150 miles, from the historic lighthouse in Montauk to the streets of Manhattan, to raise funds for a cure and to create ALS awareness.
