Copiague fifth-graders are choosing to make their mark on the world this year. Students in Jennifer Wolford’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School celebrated International Dot Day on Sept. 15 by expressing themselves and how they plan to make a difference in the world.
To prepare for their culminating project, the students read Peter Reynolds’ “The Dot,” which encourages people to “make a mark and see where it takes you.” They also videoconferenced with Mr. Reynolds, who told the students to visualize the person they want to be and make it happen. Additionally, the students held class discussions, participated in interactive writing projects and created their own “dot” art projects that allowed them to express to their classmates how they were choosing to matter.
Fifth-grader Brandon Parbhoo said he wants to make his mark on the world by joining the armed forces when he is old enough. In the meantime, he plans to let people know that “whatever you want to do, you can do it if you try and you can choose to matter.”
