For the third consecutive year, members of Susan E. Wiley Elementary School’s recycle club, the Green Team, have beautified the grounds of the school by planting a tree in recognition of Earth Day. This year, the students planted a flowering cherry tree generously donated by Giannini Bros. Landscaping of Lindenhurst.
In preparation for the planting, the Copiague students researched facts about trees and their influence on everyday lives to read at the official planting. Facts such as “houses surrounded by trees sell for 18-25 percent higher than houses with no trees” and “three trees planted in the right place around buildings can cut air-conditioning costs up to 50 percent” were shared with those in attendance for the planting.
The Green Team is made up of fifth-graders who meet twice monthly with the purpose of finding ways to help the environment. The club’s advisers are Margret “Peggy” Murphy, Jackie Oquendo and Carol Vaughn.
