From Massapequa to Mattituck, more than 20 schools traveled to Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School to participate in the third annual Christopher Urban Memorial Invitational, in honor and memory of Christopher Urban. Three years ago, to honor Christopher’s memory and his commitment to the team and sport he loved, Copiague track coaches George Schroeder and John Sack organized the invitational.
The invitational featured 18 events – including pole vaulting, the 2,000/3,000 steeplechase and the Texas Sprint Relay – and ended with 22 meet records. In addition to the standard track-and-field events, fifth-graders from the four elementary schools – Deauville Gardens East, Deauville Gardens West, Great Neck Road and Susan E. Wiley – participated in a special boys and girls 4x100 relay, with each participant receiving a medal.
For the Copiague boys, Juan Taveras won the 3,000-meter steeple chase in 10:43, while Jose Villatoro took third with a time of 11:04. Aaron McFadden won the 110 high hurdles at 0:15.29; DJ Brown took third place in the 400 intermediate hurdles with 0:57.8; and Maurice Epps won the high jump, clearing 6 feet 4 inches, while Matt Prusaczyk cleared 5 feet 10 inches for third place. The 4x400 team of DJ, Aaron, Max Tsar and Jonathan Argueta placed second with a time of 3:28.
On the girls’ side, Zyare Brown took third in the 100 hurdles at 0:17.3, and freshman Nickeela Austin took third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 0:60.81. Freshman Nakai Matthews took second in the 800 with a time of 2:33, and Ashley Arquer placed second in the 200 at 0:26.64. Shanisha Jeffery placed second in the discus with a toss of 97 feet 5 inches, and the girls’ team of Jen Ruiz, Ashley, Ashley Jackson and Nickeela won the Texas Sprint Relay.
