To reinforce the rules of the bus that kindergarten students at Deauville Gardens Elementary School in Copiague have followed throughout the year, Safety Sally drove her educational bus into town.
Kay Heidt, the Safety Sally instructor, began the lesson by teaching the students the correct way to cross the street in front of a school bus. Using two student volunteers from each class she demonstrated “the ten-step rule.’” The ten-step rule, consists of having the students walk ten big steps in front of the bus, look for the bus driver’s face, and watch for his/her signal to continue crossing, and finally to stop on the driver’s side of the bus to look both ways before finishing their journey crossing the street.
After practicing the ten-step rule the students entered Safety Sally’s school bus to watch a movie demonstrating the rules of bus safety. Several of the rules discussed included proper behavior at the bus stop, on the bus, and getting off of the bus. Following the presentation of the movie, students were shown the correct way to evacuate a school bus in case of an emergency.
