Connecting the Past to the Present
In conjunction with the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, sixth-grade students at Copiague Middle School recently welcomed Holocaust survivor Werner Reich to speak on the atrocities of World War II and to teach the lessons of the Holocaust in fighting intolerance and bullying. During his visit, Reich spoke of his experiences during World War II, including his emigration from Germany to Yugoslavia, two years spent in hiding, two years in the concentration camps of Terezin, Birkenau and Auschwitz, and a death march to Mauthausen.
“A few of the sixth-grade teachers organized this wonderful learning opportunity where our students learned so much about getting along with one another, the dangers of stereotypes and the importance of respect,” remarked Middle School Principal Andrew Lagnado.
