On Thursday, June 14, Copiague’s Deauville Gardens Elementary School hosted its second annual Flag Day Celebration. Dressed in red, white, and blue and waving mini American flags, the students welcomed members of the Copiague Fire Department and the New York Air National Guard based out of Westhampton Beach. During the ceremony, Staff Sergeant Brian Hammel of the 106 Rescue Wing from the Air National Guard spoke to the students about the American flag and asked them trivia questions. There was also a group sing-a-long of patriotic songs such as “God Bless the U.S.A.” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and students read essays on “What the American Flag Means to Me” and “What It Means to Be an American.” The student essay winners were kindergartner Abigail Reynolds, first-grader Quinn Rozmus, second-grader Leighla Forrester, third-grader Olivia Healy, fourth-grader Isabella Galarza, and fifth-grader Natalia Kacala.
