Through the use of original anti-bullying songs and popular childhood games, members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Hip Hop Club visited Susan E. Wiley Elementary School to promote positive behavior. “Using the talents of the high school students, the goal of the program was to foster a community of tolerance and acceptance within the community, especially at the elementary level,” remarked Hip Hop Club advisor Yvan Garcia.
Reinforcing the lessons that students learn in their classrooms about kindness and respecting one another, the high school students used elementary volunteers to play the telephone game and Simon Says. The purpose of telephone was to show the students how rumors spread and grow larger than the truth, while Simon Says was used to stress the importance of being a leader, not a follower.
