Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School recently held its annual Tri-Yearly Varsity Sports Awards Dinner honoring the best and brightest of the Spring 2012 season. This season the District honored members of the boys and girls track, softball, boys and girls lacrosse, and baseball teams.
Continuing a yearly tradition, special awards in memory of Sean Ryan Noonan, Daniel O’Connell, and Jared Pennington were awarded to members of the varsity baseball and lacrosse teams. This year the Sean Ryan Noonan Memorial Lacrosse Award was given to freshman Brett Conner, the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Baseball Award was presented to senior Christopher Falci, and the Jared Pennington Memorial Lacrosse Award was given to senior Christopher Smith.
The Section XI Gold Key Award, the highest Section XI honor that an athlete can receive, and Golden Eagle awards were also presented at the ceremony. The Gold Key is awarded to student-athletes who letter in eight junior varsity or varsity seasons in grades 10–12. This year’s recipients were Jeyson Ayala, Ramon Carcamo, Janel Francis, Desmond Guidroz, Jacqueline Kagiwada, Sean Lee, Chade Marshall, Wesley Merriwether, Jessica Murphy, Ronny Paulino, Christopher Smith, and Brittney Walsh.
The Golden Eagle award is given to the student on each team who had the highest cumulative grade point average for the season. For the spring season, Emily Clark (softball), Amer Islam (boys lacrosse), Joshua Outsen (baseball), Kayla Rosario (girls lacrosse), Lizbelle Taveras (girls track), and Zachary Wilson (boys track) received the Golden Eagle.
