Twenty-seven students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School were recently inducted into the Isabella M. Driscoll Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). Officers Shanice McKenzie (President), Dan Handy (Vice President), Amber Perrier (Secretary), and Meagan Pride (Treasurer) spoke about the characteristics that best describe a National Honor Society member: Service, Character, Leadership, and Scholarship. The annual candlelight induction ceremony, held in the high school auditorium, honored those students who possess the four qualities.
This year, NHS advisors Rose Anne Fuss and Denise L. Raimondi dressed as characters Sheriff Woody Pride and Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise to discuss the themes of growing up, friendship, loyalty, endless possibilities (“to infinity and beyond”), and the importance of maintaining, creating, and fostering relationships. The special guest speaker at the Induction ceremony was Suffolk County Legislator Duwayne Gregory.
Congratulations to the inductees and their parents. The inductees for the 2010-2011 school year are: juniors Dilara Altuner, Gregory Lange, Chade Marshall, Daniela Rendon, and Alex Tavares; and sophomores Caitlin Alfano, Nicole Alvarez, Ashley Arquer, Emily Clark, Aleksandra Czarnecka, Robert Gioia, Grace Hall, Christina Hernandez, Amer Islam, Roxana Jimenez, Casey Mahan, Manowara Matubber, Janice Mayard, Ashley Mirabile, Jessica Pearson, Stwart Pena, Samantha Perez, Thomas Rogers Jr., John Romano, Kayla Rosario, Madison Swenton, and Lizbelle Taveras.
