Throughout the school year, the Shared Decision-Making Committee at Great Neck Road Elementary School in Copiague holds a monthly "character café" to celebrate students who have been good role models for the various character pillars that the students learn about every month. Two students from each classroom are chosen to attend the café during their lunchtime, where they sit at a specially decorated table, receive certificates and prizes, and have lunch with a few teachers. At the end of the year, all of the monthly student role models, along with their parents, attended an ice cream social to celebrate and recognize their great character. Additionally, the committee held an essay contest for the intermediate grades celebrating “What It Means to Sit at the Character Café” and a poster contest for the primary grades. The essay contest winners were: Nia Blackman, Adam Wiszowaty, Aniyah Woods, Shane Abney, Katherine Cruz, Kassandra Camacho, Gabrielle Diegue, Edward Guardado, Samantha Dell'Orio, Anthony Knight, and Tatiana Henry. The poster contest winners were: Ava Ullman, Lynice Garcia, Sean Lopez, Rosangel Nunez, Victoria Baez, Leonel Saravia, Stephanie Cortes, Angel Hernandez, Emma Nuzzi, Elysse Orr, Raul Garcia, Larisa Gutierrez, and Madalyn Molina.
