Incoming sixth- and ninth-grade students at Copiague Middle School and Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School had an opportunity to get familiar with their new surroundings prior to the official first day of school. To prepare their newest students for the year, each school hosted an orientation and barbecue at which the students, joined by their parents, received their schedules, toured the building, practiced their locker combinations and mingled with fellow classmates. “Today is geared to help ease the transition from elementary school to middle school. To help them get the layout of the building, practice with their lockers and meet their teachers,” said Middle School Principal Andrew Lagnado in his welcome. During his welcome at the high school, Assistant Principal Jeffrey Myers stressed the importance of getting off on the right foot. “From the first day of your freshman year, it is important to remember that everything counts,” said Mr. Myers. “Focus on your academics and extracurricular and community activities.”
