Fifth-graders in Jennifer Wolford’s class at Copiague’s Susan E. Wiley Elementary School studied past and present presidential election campaigns leading up to and following the Nov. 6 re-election of President Barack Obama.
Leading up to the election, the students read the book “What Presidents Are Made Of” by Hanoch Piven, watched campaign videos – including the top 10 most effective presidential campaign political ads – and viewed snippets of the 2012 debates between President Obama and Governor Mitt Romney. Additionally, the students researched a given president, created an ingredients box consisting of interesting bits of information and presented it to their classmates.
As a follow-up to the election, the students watch President Obama’s victory speech and Governor Romney’s concession speech, as well as reviewed the Electoral College votes, specifically focusing on the Long Island votes.
