Student-athletes from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School were honored at the school’s Spring Sports Awards Night on May 20. The evening, sponsored by the Booster Club, was filled with praise for members of the track, baseball, softball and lacrosse teams for their commitment to teamwork, school and themselves.
In addition to honoring the most valuable and most improved players, as well as giving out the coach’s award for each team, Joshua Outsen, a senior of the baseball team, was awarded the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Award. This award is presented each spring in memory of Mr. O’Connell, who attended Copiague High School and was killed in action serving his country in 1969.
The Section XI Gold Key Award, the highest Section XI honor that an athlete can receive, and Golden Eagle Awards were also presented at the ceremony. The Gold Key is awarded to student-athletes who letter in eight junior varsity or varsity seasons in grades 10-12. This year’s recipients were Ashley Arquer (field hockey, winter track, spring track), DJ Brown (cross-country, winter track, spring track), A’leah Daleus (soccer, winter track, spring track), Alex Negro (football, winter track, lacrosse), Juan Taveras (cross-country, winter track, spring track), Lizbelle Taveras (volleyball, winter track, spring track), Jeff Urbina (football, wrestling, spring track) and Caitlin Zowak (soccer, basketball, softball).
The Golden Eagle Award is given to the student on each team who had the highest cumulative grade point average for the season. For the spring season, Dawn Gioia (girls track), Grace Hall (softball), Amer Islam (boys lacrosse), Joshua Outsen (baseball), Nicolette Vasseur (girls lacrosse) and Zachary Wilson (boys track) received the Golden Eagle.
