Continuing to perpetuate a positive culture change, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School sponsored its sixth Challenge Day in three years. Challenge Day was instituted to provide the students with workshops and programs that encourage communication and demonstrate the possibility of friendship and understanding through the celebration of diversity and truth.“Today encourages communication and bridges the gap between our diverse student population,” said JoAnn Erwin, who helped coordinate the day. “It has become such a great, positive event that students are asking to be included. This day provides our students with a safe, supportive environment to speak out on anything and everything.”
Throughout the daylong program, students who were chosen by their social studies teachers took part in numerous activities geared toward building trust and getting to know one another. The day began with icebreaker exercises followed by trust-building games, in which they participated in a trust train and shared facts about themselves that others might not know. The day culminated with an open microphone, at which time every student was encouraged to talk about how they would like to make a change and foster a better culture and environment for everyone.
