For one week every December, physical education teachers William Bennett and Rachel Cone transform the gymnasium at Copiague’s Great Neck Road Elementary School into a winter wonderland.
During gym classes, the students worked on their hand-eye coordination by playing ice hockey, snowball toss or ice bowling. They used their “brain muscles” playing a holiday match game or word jumble. The students also had opportunities to bobsled across the gym using a scooter and to ski down Great Neck Road Mountain using the Nintendo Wii gaming system. “This is a great activity and the kids look forward to it every year,” said Mr. Bennett. “We try to take the units they'll be studying throughout the year, such as hockey, and give the whole thing a winter theme. It's a great time for everyone and the kids get to work on their skills.”
