Competing in their first-ever competition, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Competition Cheerleading Squad won first place. The 16-member squad, along with their coaches, Jean-Ann Kohn and Tracy Wenzeler, traveled to Mount Sinai High School and participated in the Rookie Cheerleading Competition, where they were placed in the medium varsity division. “As this was our first competition the nerves were in full swing and the girls were very excited,” said Coach Kohn. “The girls took the mat and exploded with energy, putting on the best performance of the routine to date. Coach Wenzeler and myself have never been more proud of the girls; they have worked extremely hard to achieve this amazing accomplishment!”
According to Peter Cesare, Coordinator of Physical Education and Athletics, this is the best a Copiague cheerleading squad has ever done in a competition.
