Second graders in the Copiague School District continued a handy tradition as they teamed up with Home Depot associate Jim Gilchrist to build birdhouses. Working with parent volunteers and dressed in brightly colored orange Home Depot aprons, the students sanded, glued, and hammered nails to create their perfect birdhouses.
Through this partnership with Home Depot, Mr. Gilchrist visits all of the district’s second-grade classrooms and teaches the students how to build birdhouses. Home Depot provides the tools and materials that the students use to assemble and complete their birdhouses. The program gives students the opportunity to practice following instructions and working cooperatively in small groups, while further developing their hand-eye coordination.
