To conclude their “Cultures Around the World” unit, as part of the New York State social studies curriculum, third-graders from Great Neck Road Elementary School hosted a Chinese New Year celebration. To prepare for the event, the students compared the traditions of both the Chinese and American New Year’s celebrations, as well as learned the geography and culture of China. During the celebration, the students wore red, which symbolizes good luck in China; sat at tables representing different areas of China – including Shanghai, Beijing and the Great Wall – and enjoyed lunch from a local Chinese restaurant; and made kites, which were first invented by the Chinese.
