Set in present-day New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood, “In the Heights” tells the story of love, loss, courage and culture over a three-day period from July 3-5. For three days in March, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students took to the stage and perform their rendition of the Broadway musical.
Leading a group of talented student-actors was senior Angel Aracena, who performed the main role of Usnavi de la Vega. Joining Angel were Stephanie Fischer as Nina Rosario, David Szabo as Benny, Lindsay Griffiths as Vanessa, Jodi-Ann Carter as Abuela Claudia, Kyle Beck as Sonny, Ariana Espinal as Daniela and Marcia Aracena as Carla. Additionally, Richard Taveras and Marissa Ramirez portrayed Nina’s parents, Kevin and Camila Rosario, while Dimitri Posy, Oscar Fernandez, Maria Ospina Benitez and Jeffrey Yanes played Graffiti Pete, Jose/Domingo, Yolanda and Piragua Guy, respectively.
Gina Occhiogrosso directed the musical and received support from assistant director Michelle Budion, vocal director Marc Levenson, choreographer Sylvia Walsh, costume designer Meredith Wanzer, set designer Lauren Lefkowitz and pit orchestra conductor Eric Dobmeier.
