In honor of the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, students, staff, and administrators at Copiague Middle School paid solemn tribute to the memory of the heroes and survivors. Wearing red, white, and blue as a sign of their unity, the building spent most of the day remembering the tragic events of 9/11/01, before ending with a moment of silent meditation.
Leading up to the day, the teaching staff created lesson plans in their respective content areas. Utilizing Internet and library resources, as well as their own memories of that fateful day, students at the middle school received a unique history lesson. In an art class, students were asked, “What does peace mean to you?” The artists then created their own meaning of peace using only images. In a social studies class, students completed an assignment that asked them what they know, what they want to know, and what they had learned about 9/11 during their class discussion.“It is my belief that we as educators have a very important role that relates to everything that surrounds this tragic event,” remarked Middle School Principal Andrew Lagnado. “Education is the key. It is the key to teaching tolerance; it is the key to appreciating and celebrating diversity; it is the key to teaching our children to problem-solve, work through challenges, and work together.”
