In celebration of February as Black History Month, students at Copiague’s Great Neck Road Elementary School enjoyed a performance of the Phyllis Rose Dance Company’s “Step Lively Please” program. The arts-in-education program, which was sponsored by the PTA, celebrated African-American history and culture through dance, music and folklore and their influence on American pop culture. During the program, the students enjoyed performances of traditional African dances from Kenya and the Mandingo people of Sierra Leone, as well as the Charleston and the Lindy Hop, dances that were popular in the United States in the 1920s and 1940s and took their influences from traditional African dances.
