Upon their return to school following Hurricane Sandy, Maureen Gaertner’s second-graders at Copiague’s Susan E. Wiley Elementary School created thankful turkey art projects. “In previous years, many students were thankful for materialistic items, such as toys and games, but following the superstorm, my students this year were very thankful for the important things in life – family, friends and basic necessities,” said Mrs. Gaertner.
To prepare for creating their own “thankful turkeys,” the students read a story about Thanksgiving, brainstormed ideas at their desks and then colored and designed their turkeys.
