When Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island, many residents of the Copiague community were left to contend with an array of devastation. In response to Superstorm Sandy’s aftermath, the Copiague community did what it does best – came together to help those in need. Holding drives for everything from food to clothing to needed supplies, district students and staff members once again demonstrated the caring nature of the schools. “Due to the kindness and selflessness of many, our schools have been well-stocked with food and clothing for our students in need,” said Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Leunig. “I think I can speak for all of us when I say this has been one of the most challenging – and rewarding – couple of weeks I have ever experienced. From the moment we reopened school, an incredible positive energy took over throughout our district and community – and magic happened. On any normal day in Copiague, these kinds of things happen, but what I have witnessed these past few weeks was just overwhelming.” In addition to the fundraising efforts districtwide, crisis teams reached out to each family affected by Sandy and assisted with resource referrals, delivering required donations and providing much-needed support.
