Fifth-graders at Copiague’s Susan E. Wiley Elementary School received a lesson in literacy from musician Taylor Swift as they participated in Scholastic’s Read Every Day free live webcast. According to Scholastic’s website, the mission of the Read Every Day program is “to promote the importance and value of reading for success in school and in life, and to give you the tools and ideas for making reading easier, more fun and more accessible to the kids in your life – and for all children, all around the world.”
During the 30-minute webcast, Taylor spoke about her love of reading and writing, encouraged the students to be creative, and answered questions from the live audience, as well as questions submitted by schools from across the country prior to the Oct. 24 event. “Infusing technology into literacy, and using a positive role model such as Taylor to reinforce what the students are learning in class, is not only engaging and relatable to the students, but also gets them excited about reading,” said Principal Cynthia Florio.
Fifth-grader Carolina Gonzalez was excited to see and listen to Taylor speak about literacy. “I love Taylor. She is such a great inspiration. To see where she came from – growing up on a farm – to becoming who she is today makes you believe that dreams really do come true.”
Following the question-and-answer period, Taylor ended the webcast with a performance of her hit single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”
